I designed posters, handouts, and yard signs promoting “Slouching Toward Sunshine,” an exhibition of contemporary art.
The show’s theme and title are inspired by the poem “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats. Representing a collection of American artwork based on socio-political themes, the goal of the poster design was to convey a subervise, grunge, futuristic attitude, with a side order of disturbing nationalism.
The stark yellow stripes against black and white makes a demanding visual statement, and the sublte 'falling apart' of the letters, matched with the upside-down American flag, adds a disturbing element. A touch of grain completes the effect.
To drum up interest in the show, I designed a series of pseudo-political yard signs which prominently featured quotes from Yeats’ poem, “The Second Coming”. They intentionally borrow the design aesthetic of the retro political signs you might have found in a small town election forty years ago.
